This week we want to focus your attention on a theme that for Kito is of fundamental importance: children’s standards of living.
Sometimes it is difficult to realize how different the situation is between Italy and the Philippines, and for this reason thanks to the data provided by the WHO, the Global Health Observatory and the World Bank on the Millennium Development Goals, we want to make a little comparison:
- While in Italy there is the probability that 3 children every 1000 may die before age 1, in the Philippines 24 children face the same risk;
- 30 per 1000 children may die before having reach the age of 5 in the Philippines, while the average in the East Asia and Pacific region is of 20 children. In Italy the rate is 4 children every 1000;
- While in Italy the problem of malnutrition of children in no more a national concern, in the Philippines 20% of the children under 5 years old are stunting;
- the Philippines is one of the 10 countries in the world where there is a concentration of non-vaccinated children for Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP3), while in Italy the health care system guarantees almost an universal coverage.
Kito Onlus, as one of its top priorities, works to improve the conditions of children in terms of health, hygiene and nutrition. In developing its projects of training and prevention, children’s conditions are one of the major concerns, since they are the most vulnerable group in case of emergencies.
