ANC consultations are an important part of the strategy to reduce maternal, newborn and child mortality. Experts recommend at least four ANC visits, which should include tetanus toxoid vaccination, screening and treatment for infection, and the identification of women at risk of troublesome deliveries and other complications that may arise during pregnancy. According to the World Health Organization, 95% of Filipino women receive at least one visit during their pregnancy, but only 78% of them receive the recommended four visits. In developing countries, ANC also offers opportunities to spread knowledge on other health issues, such as nutrition, family planning, sexually-transmitted infections, tuberculosis and other diseases.
